BRIDGET JONES’S BABY (2016) MOVIE REVIEW

“BRIDGET IS CHARMING, SWEET AND FUNNY”

Oscar winner Renee Zellweger — after an absence of six years, returns to the screen this week in her 35th motion picture — BRIDGET JONES’S BABY. And what a return it is! This third BRIDGET installment starring Miss Zellweger is absolutely charming, sweet and funny. It has been a long time since a movie audience had this much fun. The laughter never stops. This is due to the sharp direction of Sharon Maguire (BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY) and thanks to a bright and witty screenplay written by Helen Fielding (based on the characters and story she created), Dan Mazer and Emma Thompson. Yes, “that” Emma Thompson. It will come as no surprise that this 5 times Oscar nominated and 2 times Oscar winning British actress — absolutely steals the movie playing Bridget’s gynecologist, Dr. Rawlings.

Miss Zellweger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in COLD MOUNTAIN (2003). She was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY (2001) and again for CHICAGO (2003).

Earlier this week — visiting with Jimmy Fallon on THE TONIGHT SHOW, I could hardly recognize Miss Zellweger. Yes, she is older. But her face looks so different.

This is a feel good movie, a light romantic comedy — with an older and wiser Bridget, still searching for “Happily Ever After”. Suddenly pregnant, she is unsure of who the real father is. When the choice is between Patrick Dempsey or Colin Firth, both mother and child cannot lose. And neither can the audience.
