RICKI AND THE FLASH: COMING SOON

Meryl Streep gives one of the most layered performances of any actress this year. Ricki and the Flash is by far one of the most multi-layered movies of this year. However, the older you are, the more life you have experienced, will probably determine just how much you will like this film. 4 STARS

Fantastic 4 is a mess. It has its moments but they are few and far between. Unfortunately as a potential blockbuster, it just may be the biggest disappointment of our summer movies. 2 STARS

AN IRRATIONAL MAN: THE MONOTONY OF A TROUBLED LIFE AND LIVING WITHOUT PURPOSE?

On December 1st, Woody Allen will turn 80. He is an actor, comedian, director, writer and playwright. He has been nominated 24 times for an Academy Award and has won 4 Oscars. Rarely have I disliked any one of his 40-plus films as much as his newest project which should arrive and depart quickly at your neighborhood cinema. AN IRRATIONAL MAN is “dark, dark, dark.” Those were my first words when leaving the screening.

I get it. Education vs. Ignorance. Educated vs. Morality. Don’t go down this road Woody — but it seems that you are trying to work out some of the skeletons in your private-life closet. The not-so-hidden meaning behind the words. The story of the professor (Joaquin Phoenix) and the student (Emma Stone). The result is one of the most disappointing screenplays of the year.

P.S. You will come to hate the Ramsey Lewis Trio and the monotony of The “In” Crowd. The monotony of a troubled life and living without purpose ?

Two Stars (for the cinematography).
