As June now comes to an end, a total of 35 films have been reviewed here on News3LV over the past six months. The first five reviews of the new year were actually 2016 releases. These films did not open here in Las Vegas until January. All of them received a News3LV “A” score. All of them went on to become major Academy Award nominated films of the past year.
We have now reached the halfway mark of 2017. Only eight of 30 of the News3LV reviewed films received an “A” score. An equal number of new films received a “D” score.
All in all, thus far — 2017 has had more of its share of mediocre films. Unfortunately, a “BLOCKBUSTER” movie in today’s market is defined as box office dollars, and not necessarily a quality film. And even some of the worst films this year will end up making a tidy profit from the huge international box office revenue.
Of all of the 2017 films released this year — including an equal number of films that I did not review, I do not expect nor project that any of these films will be nominated for Best Picture of the Year. The possible exception could be Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
As a six month 2017 movie review scorecard, the eight “A” films include in order of their release into Las Vegas:
- BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
- THE PROMISE
- THEIR FINEST
- THE LOVERS (CINEMA PODCAST)
- WONDER WOMAN
- MEGAN LEAVEY
- ALL EYEZ ON ME
As far as waiting for an exceptional movie that could possibly be at the level of a “Best Picture of the Year”, that wait is about to end. Three new films arrive in Las Vegas next month that you should keep an eye on. The first two I have already screened but am not allowed to review until the critic’s embargo is lifted by each studio.
WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
Length: 133 MINUTES
This is the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise. Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. The battle to determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet is epic. The direction, the screenplay, the production on every level and the cast are outstanding. This is a “wow” film that will absolutely take your breath away.
THE BIG SICK
Length: 119 Minutes
This new film is the “Silver Linings Playbook” of 2017. Just a sweet, sensitive, and revealing love story. It is a comedy full of romance, regret and a lot of heart. There is a lot of truth in this brilliant screenplay that most of us can identify with. Two worlds. Two identities. Kumail Nanjiani plays a fictionalized version of himself. Zoe Kazan as Emily lights up the screen. Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff together with Holly Hunter and Ray Romano — almost steal the picture. Not to be missed.
Length: 107 Minutes
Christopher Nolan is one of the most acclaimed Hollywood directors of the 21st Century. His 9 films have earned 26 Oscar nominations and have earned $4.2 billion dollars. This World War II drama tells the true story of a colossal military disaster. This all-star cast depicts one of the fiercest battles of this war. 400,000 stranded Allied troops cannot get home. Yet, some 330,000 men were saved. By far one of the most anticipated films of 2017.
