STAR TREK BEYOND (2016) 3.0 Stars (out of 5)
I will be very surprised if STAR TREK BEYOND becomes a major summer blockbuster. That opinion should be validated next week with the release of both JASON BOURNE and SUICIDE SQUAD. We do not boldly go where no man has gone before. I think the minuses “trump” the plusses in this dazzling CGI feast. The confusing plot gave me the impression that despite the jaw-dropping images up on the screen, I was lost in space.
I think many of the “Trekkies” will find the same ambivalence. If we over-think the science-fiction, in this third go-around, there is more implausibility to be found in the film’s plot.
Chris Pine has grown as Captain James T. Kirk. So has Karl Urban as Doctor “Bones” McCoy. Zachary Quinto has had perhaps the most challenges playing Commander Spock. But he delivers a strong performance. So does Idris Elba (as Krall). Watching Zoe Saldana (as Uhura) reminded me of just how good of an actress she has become.
There is a lovely tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy. You feel his spirit throughout this film. Anton Yelchin who played Chekov, was also acknowledged. He died in a freak accident only four weeks ago. He was 27.
STAR TREK BEYOND was produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Justin Lin. The music by Michael Giacchino is spectacular. Work has already begun on a fourth film in the new series.
PG-13. 120 minutes.
